A Different Kind of Writing Support

Designed for children who may not enjoy:

• group classes
• live sessions
• speaking to unfamiliar adults
• fast-paced or high-pressure learning environments

A quieter, more comfortable way to grow in confidence and creativity.

Stories grow differently in quiet places.
Some children have whole worlds in their heads, but freeze when asked to share them aloud. Quiet Sparks was created for exactly that kind of child – a welcoming space for sensitive, shy, anxious, or neurodivergent young writers.

Safeguarding and Parent Involvement

All Quiet Sparks services are designed with safety, comfort, and transparency in mind. All communication takes place via a parent or guardian rather than directly with children. This means parents remain fully involved in the process, helping to ensure a safe, supported, and comfortable experience for every child.

This can also be especially helpful for children who may feel more comfortable expressing themselves in writing through a trusted adult, rather than communicating directly with someone new.

How It Works

A calm, structured process designed to feel simple and supportive – for both children and parents.

Step 1– Choose the right support
Start by selecting the option that best fits your child’s needs – whether that’s ongoing support, writing feedback, or one-off creative help.

Step 2 –Enquire and receive guidance
To ensure each child receives thoughtful, unhurried support, Quiet Sparks works with a limited number of families at any one time. After your enquiry, I’ll confirm availability and guide you through the next steps.

A young girl with glasses and long hair, wearing a plaid shirt with a bow in her hair, is smiling and working on a laptop in a bright room. There are pink musical notes and a pink drawn balloon with a string around her head. A notebook with pink flower drawings is on the desk.

Step 3 – Submit through the portal
You submit your child’s writing (or idea) through the secure submission portal, at a pace that feels manageable.

Step 4 –Thoughtful response within 3 days
I respond via parent email with gentle, encouraging feedback or a creative continuation, depending on the service.

Step 5 –Continue with confidence
Your child reflects, continues, and builds confidence over time – with steady, supportive guidance.

Please note: This space is for your child’s own creative writing, separate from school or homework, so their teachers can see and assess their writing independently.

The Gentle Pen Method

Some children have rich imaginations – they just need the right environment to express them.

The Gentle Pen Method is built on five core ideas:

Space before speed
Children are given time to think, reflect, and form their ideas before responding.

Craft before perfection
The focus is on storytelling and expression, not grades or flawless results.

Encouragement before correction
Feedback begins by building confidence, not pointing out mistakes.

Voice before rules
Each child’s unique way of writing is valued more than rigid structures or formulas.

Progress without pressure
Growth is gentle, steady, and supported – never rushed or forced.

Designed to help children and young people feel safe, confident, and heard in their writing.

Quiet Sparks services are designed specifically for children and teenagers and focus on confidence-building,
creativity and gentle guidance.

They are separate from my professional editing services for adult writers, which focus on publishing and
industry-standard manuscript development.

Hi! I’m Kerry.

I created Quiet Sparks for the child I used to be.

The shy, quiet one. The anxious one. The one who had entire worlds in her head but didn’t
always have the confidence to share them out loud.

Writing was my safe place – and still is.
It was freedom to imagine, reflect, and express myself. It was where I could think without
interruption, imagine without judgement, and say things I couldn’t always say in a room full of people.

Meet the Founder

Before moving fully into editing, I spent over 20 years working in education, supporting children one-to-one, handling parent-facing roles, and quietly observing all the thoughtful, creative young people who simply needed a little more time, space, and the right kind of encouragement to shine.

I learned that growth doesn’t come from pressure. It comes from patience, clarity, and someone steady alongside you.

Today, I’m an author, book editor, and a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).
Editing has taught me how stories are built.
Education taught me how confidence is built.

Quiet Sparks brings those two things together – along with my lifelong love of storytelling.

Everything I offer is designed with the same approach in mind. It’s structured enough to feel safe, calm enough to feel manageable, and personal enough to honour each young writer’s voice.

I’m not here to mark or grade.
I’m here to notice what’s working, gently strengthen what isn’t yet, and help young writers develop their craft while feeling proud of the stories only they can tell.

Because sometimes the quiet children have the biggest stories to tell.
They just need the right space to tell them.
