Editor, Author… Blogger?
An intro post from a freelance editor who loves ellipses, extra-hot heroes, and whipping them both into shape.
So apparently, I’ve decided to add ‘blogger’ to my list of questionable life choices.
Because clearly, writing and editing books, posting and promoting on a million social media networks, and running a business weren’t enough chaos for one human.
Anyway, if we haven’t met yet, hi – I’m Kerry, a freelance editor and author with over twenty years' experience in education, being surrounded by small humans, mountains of lost property, and enough paperwork to justify my alarming stationery habit. There’s just something about a new pack of pens!
These days, I spend my time helping authors polish their prose, strengthen their stories, and clarify their commas. All without losing their voice or the weird and wonderful idiosyncrasies that make them theirs. My specialities are romance, romcoms, women’s fiction, and kidlit, from picture books right through to young adult – though I have been known to get stuck into thrillers, horrors, and even memoirs. Basically, if your story has heart, humour, or hopscotching hippos, I’m all in!
As an author myself, I can relate to it all – the sobbing over that sentimental scene, overusing that crutch word (you know the one), or trying to wrangle your protagonist back into line when they choose to go feral at 2am.
For me, editing isn’t about tearing your story apart.
It’s about making it shine.
You’ll find that I’m the kind of editor who’ll tell you if your book starts in the wrong place, that your slow-burn romance needs to be more simmer and less flash fire, and ask whether your FMC (Female Main Character) really needs to roll her eyes fifteen times in one chapter (Yes, I counted).
But I’ll also tell you that your story deserves to sparkle, that I believe in you even when you don’t, and that we’re absolutely going to make your characters dance off the page, or even hula-hoop, skip, or cartwheel – once we’ve put the kettle on that is.
So, what can you expect from this blog?
I’ll be posting around once a month (or more when life – and spoons – allow), and as for content… a bit of everything. Editing advice that actually makes sense. Behind-the-scenes peeks into an editor’s brain (brace yourself, it’s not always pretty). Honest chats about mental health and neurodivergence in the creative world. What working in education taught me about children’s books. And plenty of humour, because editing is serious business, but it doesn’t have to be that serious.
If that sounds like your kind of chaos, grab a drink, get comfy, and stick around. I’m glad you’re here.
Oh, and if there’s something you’d love me to blog about, or just share your editing woes, writing wins, or what your current stationery obsession is – tell me in the comments.
Here’s to writing, revising, and wrangling that chaos.
Welcome to my world – and welcome to What the Edit!?
