A Quiet Summer Garden

A gentle 4-week writing retreat (by email) for thoughtful, imaginative young writers aged 9–16

Not every young writer wants a busy workshop.
Not everyone wants long feedback, deadlines, or big group spaces.

Some just want a quiet place to think… and write.

A Quiet Summer Garden is a calm, low-pressure writing experience delivered entirely by email.
No live sessions. No rushing. No expectations to ‘perform.’

Just a small, steady invitation each week to write something of your own.

How It Works

Running this summer from 3rd - 30th August.

Each week, a gentle ‘garden letter’ arrives:

🌻 A short piece of writing to read (calm, thoughtful, and not too long)

🌻 A few optional prompts to spark ideas

🌻 A simple invitation to write something – anything your child likes

There’s no set format. They might send:

🌳A paragraph 🌳A poem 🌳A short story

🌳A list 🌳A strange or silly idea 🌳Or just a few lines

Small is perfect.

Writers can reply any time over each weekend, at their own pace.

A Note for Parents/Guardians

All communication takes place by email, via a parent or carer.
There are no live sessions, group chats, or public sharing spaces.

This is a calm, private, and carefully paced experience.

Limited to a small number of writers to keep replies personal and unhurried.

A young boy is sitting at a desk and typing on a laptop computer. There are colorful doodles of smiley faces, a spider, and abstract shapes drawn on the transparent screen or glass in front of him. The background appears to be a bright room with shelves and a green container.

What They’ll Receive in Return

Each piece is met with:

🌷Warm, thoughtful encouragement 🌷A few gentle reflections or questions

🌷Optional ideas if they’d like to continue 🌷A gentle ‘badge’ that reflects their writing style

🌷There is no marking, grading, or heavy critique.

A Quiet Invitation

If your child would like a small, steady creative space this summer–
something calm, flexible, and entirely their own–they are very welcome here.

You don’t have to write something big.
You just have to begin.

The Shape of Summer

Over four weeks, we’ll gently move through:

🍀 Noticing and arriving

🍀 Exploring hidden corners

🍀 Writing through feelings (in creative ways)

🍀 Gathering something to keep

There’s no pressure to follow a set path… each writer is free to go wherever their ideas lead.

What Makes This Different

This is not a course on how to write.

It’s not about fixing, editing, or improving.

It’s a space for:

🌲Writing without pressure

🌲Exploring ideas quietly

🌲Following your own interests

🌲Letting thoughts take shape in your own way

Writers don’t need to share anything personal, and nothing is ever required beyond what feels comfortable.

Who This Is For

This retreat is especially suited to young people who are:

🌺 Thoughtful, imaginative, or introspective

🌺 Shy, anxious, or easily overwhelmed

🌺 Neurodivergent or sensitive to busy environments

🌺 More comfortable writing than speaking

🌺 Educated at home or outside traditional classrooms

But any young writer who would enjoy a quieter, more flexible space is very welcome.
