Combination Line & Copy Editing
(Standard or Stylistic)
Ready to polish your prose and tighten your writing?
This service combines the precision of copyediting with the stylistic flow of line editing. If you feel like you’ve got the plot down, the arcs arcing, and the ending perfected, but the words need a little lift, this is the one for you.
What It Is
Standard: A sentence-level line and copyedit focused on clarity, flow, and word choice, alongside correction of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency. This service polishes and tightens your prose so it reads smoothly and professionally, while preserving your established narrative voice.
At this level, I make light to moderate line-level improvements to enhance clarity, emotional impact, and show vs tell, offering targeted suggestions in comments where phrasing, emphasis, or engagement can be strengthened.
This service assumes the manuscript already demonstrates a coherent narrative voice and generally effective sentence construction. It does not include substantive rewriting, sustained voice development, or large-scale condensation or restructuring of paragraphs or passages.
Best suited for manuscripts that are largely working at the sentence level and need refinement.
Stylistic: This service is designed for manuscripts that require deeper stylistic intervention in addition to technical correction.
Includes all elements of the standard line and copyedit, with more substantive sentence-level work throughout to improve voice, emotional engagement, rhythm, and readability. It actively addresses issues such as excessive telling, overwritten or repetitive prose, flat or instructional tone, weak word choice, loss of voice across chapters, and ineffective paragraph or passage flow.
Entire sentences, paragraphs, or passages may be rewritten or condensed where necessary to strengthen showing, pacing, and impact, while preserving the author’s intent and core voice.
The difference between these services is not whether craft issues are addressed, but how intensively they must be repaired on the page.
What You Get
In-line edits directly in your manuscript using Word’s tracked changes.
Notes using the comment facility.
Sentence-level edits relative to service.
Copyedits for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
How I Work
My goal as an editor is to strengthen your writing while preserving your voice and creative authority. For that reason, I use a combination of tracked changes and commented suggestions, depending on the nature and scope of the revision.
Technical and light craft edits, such as grammar, punctuation, clarity, word choice, and smaller line-level improvements, are typically made directly in tracked changes.
When a sentence, paragraph, or passage would benefit from more substantial rewriting (for example, to improve voice, emotional engagement, flow, or show vs tell), I often provide the revision as a commented suggestion rather than applying it outright. This allows you to review the intent behind the change and decide whether to use it as written, adapt it, or keep your original phrasing.
Pricing
Up to 30,000 – £350 - £560
30,001–60,000 – £450 - £720
60,001–90,000 – £550 - £880
Over 90,000: +£10 - £15 per 1,000 words
All line and copyediting services begin with a sample assessment (one chapter from the middle of your manuscript) so I can provide an accurate quote.
Stylistic line editing varies widely in scope and is typically priced 20–60% higher than a standard line edit, depending on the complexity of the revisions required. If a higher level of editing is recommended, I’ll outline your options and provide a quote for your consideration.
Clients are always welcome to proceed with a standard line edit if preferred.
Please attach your sample chapter when getting in touch.
Turnaround
3-5 weeks, depending on word count and service.
How It Works
Once your slot is confirmed and the contract is signed, you’ll send your manuscript, in Word format, by the agreed start date. I’ll then get to work.
When the edit is complete, you’ll receive two versions of your manuscript:
One with all changes accepted, so you can focus on my comments and suggestions without the distraction of markup.
One with all changes tracked, so you can go through every edit one by one, with full transparency.
You can then work in whatever style suits you best – whether you want to dive straight into revisions or review each change in detail.
