Combination Line & Copy Editing
(Standard or Stylistic)
Ready to polish your prose and tighten your writing?
This service combines the precision of copyediting with the stylistic flow of line editing. If you feel like you’ve got the plot down, the arcs arcing, and the ending perfected, but the words need a little lift, this is the one for you.
What It Is
Standard: A sentence-level line and copyedit focused on clarity, flow, and word choice, alongside full technical correction of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency. This service polishes and tightens your prose so it reads smoothly and professionally, while preserving your established voice.
At this level, I make light to moderate line-level adjustments where needed to enhance readability and precision, offering suggestions in comments where phrasing, emphasis, or clarity can be strengthened.
This level is appropriate for manuscripts that are already structurally sound and demonstrate consistent, readable sentence construction. It does not include substantive rewriting, major voice development, or large-scale condensation or restructuring of passages.
Best suited for manuscripts that are largely working at the sentence level and need refinement and polish.
Stylistic: This service is designed for manuscripts that require deeper stylistic intervention in addition to technical correction.
Includes all elements of the Standard edit, plus more extensive sentence-level intervention throughout the manuscript.
This may involve:
Frequent restructuring of sentences for clarity and impact.
Condensing or expanding passages for rhythm and readability.
Strengthening voice consistency across chapters.
Reducing over-explanation, repetition, or flat/instructional tone.
Improving emotional engagement and narrative flow.
Addressing issues of excessive ‘telling’ where it weakens effect.
Some sentences, paragraphs, or passages may be rewritten where necessary to improve clarity, pacing, and voice, while preserving your intent and narrative direction.
This level is appropriate where the prose requires various refinements to improve clarity, rhythm, tone consistency, or reader engagement.
The difference between these services is not whether craft issues are addressed, but how intensively they must be repaired on the page.
What You Get
In-line edits directly in your manuscript using Word’s tracked changes.
Notes explaining suggested changes using the comment facility.
Sentence-level corrections and refinements.
Copyedits for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and consistency.
How I Work
My goal as an editor is to strengthen your writing while preserving your voice and creative intent. For that reason, I use a combination of tracked changes and commented suggestions, depending on the nature and scope of the revision.
Technical and light craft edits, such as grammar, punctuation, clarity, word choice, and smaller line-level improvements, are typically made directly in tracked changes.
When a sentence, paragraph, or passage would benefit from more substantial rewriting (for example, to improve voice, emotional engagement, flow, or show vs tell), I often provide the revision in a comment rather than applying it outright. This gives you full control over how each change is used.
Pricing
Up to 30,000 – £350 - £560
30,001–60,000 – £450 - £720
60,001–90,000 – £550 - £880
Over 90,000: +£10 - £15 per 1,000 words
All projects begin with a sample assessment (one chapter from the middle of your manuscript) to determine scope and provide an accurate quote.
After assessment, the manuscript will fall into one of the following categories:
1. Standard Line Edit – the manuscript is structurally sound and requires sentence-level refinement and technical correction.
2. Stylistic Line Edit – the manuscript requires more extensive sentence restructuring and voice refinement.
3. Not suitable for line editing at this stage – the manuscript requires developmental editing before line editing would be effective.
Stylistic line editing varies widely in intensity and is typically priced 20–60% higher than a standard line edit, depending on the level of restructuring required.
Following the assessment, I will confirm the appropriate category and outline next steps. If your manuscript falls into category 2 or 3, I will explain what this means in practical terms and outline available options before you commit to any work. Clients are then free to proceed or decline the proposed scope.
Please attach your sample chapter when getting in touch.
Turnaround
3-5 weeks, depending on word count and service.
How It Works
Once your slot is confirmed and the contract is signed, you’ll send your manuscript, in Word format, by the agreed start date. I’ll then get to work.
When the edit is complete, you’ll receive two versions of your manuscript:
One with all changes accepted, so you can focus on my comments and suggestions without the distraction of markup.
One with all changes tracked, so you can go through every edit one by one, with full transparency.
You can then work in whatever style suits you best – whether you want to dive straight into revisions or review each change in detail.
